Venue

The conference will be held at the University of Alberta’s Humanities Centre

(11121 Saskatchewan Dr NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2S1)

The campus is centrally located in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, which is one of the largest cities in western Canada. The University of Alberta is situated near the beautiful Kinsmen Park, the impressive Alberta Legislature Building, and 2 km from the city’s downtown.

Conference Events

Various conference events will be open to the wider University of Alberta community and to the general public free of charge. These special events include:

• a screening of the celebrated film The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open (2019), followed by a Q&A with co-directors Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn
• a workshop on field audio recording techniques hosted by the University of Alberta’s Sound Institute
• an artist talk on professional screenwriting presented by author, producer, and screenwriter Josh Miller
• four keynote presentations by leading researchers from a variety of areas including cognitive music theory (Bryn Hughes, University of Lethbridge), cognitive ethology (Alan Kingstone, University of British Columbia), film cognition and moral understanding (Daniel Levin, Vanderbilt University), and music psychology (Annabel J. Cohen, University of Prince Edward Island).
• a roundtable discussion of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion research and pedagogy

For those able to stay for two days after the conference, shuttle tickets for a separate two-day trip to Banff (located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains) will be made available in January. Submission Procedures

Submit proposals by 11:59 pm (UTC-12) on Friday, December 13, 2024, through Oxford Abstracts at https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/4454/submitter. Complete submission procedures and proposal types can be found at Oxford Abstracts.

The Conference Committee will aspire to circulate its decisions by February 10, 2025.

 

Presentation Information

Presenters must be current members of the Society. Nonmembers may submit a proposal but, if accepted, they must join SCSMI by Saturday, March 15, 2025 or acceptance will be withdrawn. Presenters should plan to physically attend the conference. However, a limited number of online presentation slots will be made available on a needs basis, and can be requested as part of your presentation proposal. All presentations (not including special events) will also be accessible online.

Presenters unable to attend for financial reasons are encouraged to apply for a Travel Award.

SCSMI will sponsor four travel awards for presenters in the amount of $1000 apiece. Travel award procedures and criteria are listed on the submission portal.
